He’s bigger than me

By David Rivett

Last night I went to book launch/presentation by Malcolm Gladwell, most notably author of “The Tipping Point”. His new book, “David & Goliath” analyses how underdogs, against all apparent odds, win-out and achieve great things. He uses engaging stories to make profound points and I was really struck by his analysis of what causes the oppressed or deprived to suddenly turn and confront authority, the establishment or whatever. He suggests that we crave “Legitimacy” in our society, by that he means three things, fairness, the right to challenge and be heard and transparency. Absence of one of these can be tolerated, the absence of two is likely to lead to dissent, absence of three inevitably leads to an uprising of some sort. Depending on whether there is lack of legitimacy on a national scale or in a particular niche, that may be, a revolution, a political movement or, particularly interesting to me, the formation of a campaigning organisation to restore that trinity. Wilberforce’s anti-slavery campaign, the suffragette Movement and Amnesty International were all created by this trigger mechanism as were many other campaigning charities. This book is an inspiring must read for those who feel they are struggling with inadequate resources against overwhelming odds to right some of the great wrongs of this world.
